Understanding The Job Of A Waco OB GYN

By Eliza Mendoza

When thinking about visiting a Waco OB GYN women need to understand the services that will be available to them. Many times women think that an OB GYN only offers services to women who are pregnant. This is simply not the case as this type of doctor treats many different types of women's health issues.

OB is short for obstetrician. This is the side of the specialty that deals with the pregnancy, delivery and post-pregnancy period of a woman's life. While long ago, delivering babies was primarily a job for women, today there are many men obstetricians. A woman will visit her doctor many times during her pregnancy.

The gynecologist is the specialty also known as GYN. They have the knowledge and training needed to treat the health of the female reproductive organs. Yearly, a woman should visit her GYN to have a pap smear done. The results of the pap smear will help the doctor to determine the state of her female health.

Hopefully, the woman will have a prior relationship with an OB GYN before she finds out that she is pregnant so that she does not have the stress of looking for a new doctor. However, if she does not already have one chosen, she is sure to have a friend who can offer a referral. If she is going to want to have her baby at home, she will need to find a doctor that will concur.

Making a personal connection with your doctor is vital. It is not unusual for obstetricians to be in group practices with other doctors. This can be a positive for the patient as a doctor will always be available. However, if the patient really likes a certain doctor, that doctor may not be on call when she goes into labor. If a practice has five doctors working in it, there is only a 1 in 5 chance that a particular doctor will be there when she has her baby.

A gynecological visit can leave a woman feeling exposed and because of this she might feel embarrassed. She should try to remember that whether her doctor is male or female, they are looking at her from a medical point of view. The doctor will attempt to make the patient comfortable and it is likely that a female nurse will be present during the examination by a male doctor.

The patient will be more at ease if she knows what to expect before arriving for her appointment. The doctor will likely ask the woman some questions that she might find embarrassing to answer. It is important that she realize that the questions are only be asked so that any potential health risks can be discovered.

Many women desire to be treated for women's issues by a woman. However, it must be realized that in order to be a Waco OB GYN women and men both receive the same training and education. Deciding on being treated by a female or male is the choice of the woman.
